Prince Edward Island (P.E.I.), located in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, is Canada's smallest
province with only 3 counties; Prince, Queens and Kings.
P.E.I. has a land area of 5,656 sq km (2,184 sq mi) with numerous small lakes and rivers.
The highest point on the island is in Queens County at 142 meters (466 ft). The
lowest elevation is sea level at the Atlantic Ocean.
P.E.I. entered the Dominion of Canada on July 1st, 1873. The current population is about 140,000 with 40,000
people living in the capital of Charlottetwon, Queens County. (Live Webcam click here))
The only other city on the island is Summerside, located in Prince County.
You can reach the island from Cape Jourimain, New Brunswick, via the newly constructed
Confederation Bridge. There is also a ferry service (May 01 - Dec 20) from Caribou, Nova Scotia to Wood Islands, just south-east of Charlottetown.
The island is also served by air, landing in Charlottetown. Many flights daily from
Toronto and Halifax.
